FEFAC Guidelines for sustainable sourcing of soy

FEFAC

De FEFAC stands for European Feed Manufacture's Federation. The organisation was found in 1959 by five companies from France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Today, FEFAC serves the precompetitive interests of feed manufacturers in Europe.

The challenge

There is a great variety of sustainability schemes available for purchasers of responsible soy (farmer, private companies, industry and multi-stakeholder initiatives). But there was little clarity about the differences and similarities between them. This made it difficult to determine an adequate level of responsibility and to understand the demands of each scheme.

Our approach

Together with FEFAC we developed the FEFAC Soy Sourcing Guidelines to provide transparency to operators interested in purchasing responsible soy. Based on set of principles and thorough analysis of existing schemes, concrete criteria and indicators on sustainable sourcing were developed. After a closed-loop consultation with supplier organisations in Brazil, Argentina and the United States, a public consultation with international experts, NGOs, responsible soy scheme owners, industry associations and retailers took place. Upon which we developed the final guidelines. In addition we supported the set-up of an online benchmarking platform by FEFAC and ITC for responsible soy schemes.

The impact

Until now the following schemes have been regarded by ITC as compliant with the FEFAC Guidelines: RTRS, ISCC, Amaggi, Bunge, CEFETRA, CRS, BFA, Cargill Triple S, Donau Soja, Europe Soja, SFS, Coamo, Sustainable Farming Assurance Programme, LDC, SSAP, USSEC, Agricultura Certificada, Femas, Proterra Foundation and ADM Responsible Soy. An overview of approved schemes can be found online.
