Preventing deforestation
In 2020 FEFAC asked us to help further refine the Guidelines and set up a system to also identify the schemes that prevent deforestation and land conversion. Together with FEFAC and its members, we honed the criteria based on current and foreseeable discussions in agriculture. For example, on carbon storage in soil, preventing biodiversity loss and ensuring workers' rights.
Additionally, together with the International Trade Center and FEFAC, we improved the benchmark system, and held joint discussions with various stakeholders to gauge their opinions on honing the Guidelines and the design of the benchmark tool.
Insight for soy buyers
The amended Guidelines have been available since January 2021, and the first 7 standards have been benchmarked. Meaning soy buyers have insight into the standards that offer sustainable and deforestation-free soy. Parties further down the chain can refer to the FEFAC Guidelines in their purchasing conditions. This way, they remain flexible while taking an important step towards more sustainable soy.
