BlocRice: harvest of first blockchain rice
Today in Cambodia the first rice of the BlocRice project was traded digitally between farmers of the Raeksmei Agricultural Cooperative and rice exporter AmruRice. The farmer registers their harvest after which ownership is digitally transfered — from farmer, via cooperative, to AmruRice.
Many steps in the value chain will follow, in which rice finds its final destination as rice cakes in the hands of consumers. You can then check for yourself whether the farmer who stood at the beginning of your rice cake was paid correctly and on time. And you see the journey the rice makes through the chain.
About BlocRice
In collaboration with Oxfam Novib, cracker producer Sano Rice, rice exporter AmruRice and Reaksmei cooperative, we are working on the development of a blockchain application: BlocRice. The aim of the project is to empower organic rice farmers in the Cambodian village of Reaksmei, Preah Vihear province. The blockchain application helps to create a transparent value chain and contributes to correct payments to these rice farmers.
