Mealworm as a sustainable protein source
Due to the authorisation of the lesser mealworm as a novel food, a new sustainable protein source is available which will contribute to the protein transition. Insects can be raised on less land with an efficient feed conversion compared to conventional cattle, and cause less global greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular protein sources.
Advice for novel food file
We supported Ynsect NL with preparing and submitting the novel food dossier by developing the filing strategy, performing intake assessments, searching for scientific literature, and advising the set-up of laboratory studies. After submission we supported with providing additional information and communication to EFSA and EC.
In July 2022 we were pleased to receive the positive decision from EFSA that the insect ingredients are considered safe for human consumption. Based on this positive EFSA opinion, the European Commission published the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/58 authorising the placing on the market of the frozen, paste, dried and powder forms of Alphitobius diaperinus larvae (lesser mealworm) as a novel food. The ingredients can be used in several food products such as cereal bars, pasta, meat imitates and bakery products. The authorisation has come into effect on 26 January 2023.
This is the fourth novel food dossier approved with our support under Regulation (EU) 2283/2015. Schuttelaar & Partners is herewith one of the leading organisations in the EU.
