Biohut
Ports and coastal zones are important places for young fish. Shallow water on the coast and the presence of ships and other objects in ports offers young fish a place to shelter from larger fish. The larger a fish becomes, the greater its chance of survival. A Biohut offers young fish a good chance to grow. A Biohut is an ecological cage with oyster shells in the middle. The oyster shells provide nutrients. For the Living Port Project, 10 Bio huts have been installed in the Second Port of Scheveningen. These hang under floating scaffolding.
Living Port Consortium
In order to meet the customer's demand, we looked at how it could be realized practically and at the same time we looked for a way to provide local residents and youth education about the project. We have set up a consortium with various parties. The Living Port Consortium consists of the association of the North Sea Fish Foundation from Scheveningen, Maris College and Ecocean. The consortium aims to strengthen the underwater biodiversity of the port of Scheveningen. In addition, the consortium focuses on developing knowledge and understanding among stakeholders in the port about biodiversity and how to maintain it in an urban context. Every year the Biohuts are monitored in the port and there is an increase of small fish and eel.
